Yucca filamentosa, is endemic to the gulf coast of Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida and up the Atlantic coastal plain to South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia and inland to northwestern Georgia and southwestern Alabama. It forms a short stem and clumps to a medium-sized multi-headed architectural plant with rosettes of long blue-green leaves with white curling filaments along their margins. It is hardy in most parts of the UK and its native range on the eastern seaboard gives it a high tolerance of the cold wet conditions that we get here in the British Isles.
The flowers of Yucca filamentosa are very showy and in my view somewhat underated and overlooked as garden blooms: waxy creamy-white bell-shaped flowers that hang pendulous in large panicles from the tall central scape. Utterly gorgeous.
Yucca filamentosa is one of the oldest Yuccas to have been cultivated in this country and is thought to have been first collected from the early settler colony at Roanoke Island in North Carolina over four centuries ago.
