Sedum spathulifolium 'Purpureum'
Sedum spathulifolium 'Purpureum', or Purple Broadleaf Stonecrop, is native to western North America and is found in California, Oregon, Washington and across the Canadian border into British Columbia growing from the coast to elevations of 2500m in the mountains. It forms a low vigorous ground-covering mat with pinkish-grey branching stems and greyish-silvery green terminal rosettes of leaves that are suffused with a vivid purple colouration which becomes darker over the winter months. This foliage colouration of glaucous-grey flushed with plummy purple is highly attractive and a real visual feast on such a diminutive plant. These wonderful colours forms a further strong contrast with the clusters of fragrant, bright-yellow, star-shaped flowers which are borne in summer.
Sedum spathulifolium 'Purpureum' creates a wonderful ground-cover cushion over a well-drained gravel bed and is ideal in a planting combination with other Sedums and larger architectural succulents like Agaves and Yuccas and the hardy Aloes, Aloe aristata and Aloe striatula.
