Veltheimia bracteata
Veltheimia bracteata, Forest Lily, is a South African bulbous perennial with attractive glossy foliage resembling the genus Eucomis and an extraordinary tall raceme of pinkish tubular flowers borne on an inflorescence resembling a Kniphophia. In the UK it tends to flower in late winter to early Spring, any time from January and sometimes as late as April.
Veltheimia bracteata are not fully hardy in all parts of the UK but although they will not tolerate a hard frost they can brush off a light frost surprisingly well particularly if situated up against the warmth of a protective wall or beneath the canopy of overhanging branches. In such an aspect the beautiful glossy leaves are unaffected by a few degrees of frost.
