Tulipa 'Cafe Noir' is a superb dark chocolate-maroon near-black Tulip that typically flowers in late April. It makes a wonderful cut flower or planted en masse makes a stunning display always generating comment. Black Tulips are often promoted as being ideal planted in amongst other coloured tulips, particularly white tulips. This is a rather tired gardening trope and is a matter of taste but to my my mind something is lost combining such exquisite black blooms with other tulips. If contrast is desired, they work best in combination with silvery foliage plants where their beauty is contrasted magnificently and they can be admired in their full glory.
