Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai'
Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai' is an outstanding variegated cultivar of Tricyrtis formosana with creamy margins to the foliage and speckled wine-coloured flowers. The outer saccate tepals are a darker wine colouration than the thinner inner tepals which are paler with the dark purple spots more noticeable. The stigmatic lobes are mottled and a dark orchrous-red. This cultivar was found in Japan by Clarence Falstad in the garden of a Mrs Masaoka and brought back to Walter Gardens in Michigan where it was subsequently propagated and made more widely available. The creamy leaf margins and utterly beautiful flowers are a winning combination.
A more compact lower-growing cultivar, Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai' prefers a moist shady aspect and direct sun should be avoided to ensure the variegation doesn't turn brown.
Over time it forms a dense colony.
Highly recommended.
