Ricinus communis 'Impala' is a compact cultivar of the Castor Oil Plant although no Ricinus is genuinely small and it will easily reach 2.5m in height. It has red stems, maroon foliage turning more green with age, small pale creamy-yellow flowers and large bright red seed pods creating a dramatic tropical jungle-like display of foliage and seed pods.

Water and feed it well throughout the summer. At the end of the season, plants can be cut back and brought in to a frost-free environment to over-winter and to give it a head-start the following year.

All parts of Ricinus plants are poisonous, particularly the seeds.
