Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web'
Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' is an unusual variegated cultivar of Fatsia japonica developed by the late Dr. Masata Yokoi, former Professor at Chiba University and by Yoshimichi Hirose of Iwakuni, whose book 'Fuiri Shokubutsu' (Variegated Plants), published in 1978 is a classic text. Originally selected from the cultivar Fatsia japonica 'Tsumugi Shibori' (Tie-Dye Cloth), Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' has a speckled variegation on the foliage, varying somewhat with each plant but generally resembling a mottled white to yellow frosting of dots. It is certainly a unique and extremely exotic cultivar, although not necessarily to everyone's taste as for some it too closely resembles the spotted patterning caused by red spider mite. But if you are looking for something different and not that often seen, 'Spider's Web' fits in well in combination with most jungle plantings. The variegation gets more pronounced as it grows.
It is tolerant of full sun but is best grown in partial shade and kept moist.
