Callistemon citrinus, the most reliable of the Australian Bottlebrushes in the UK climate, is an evergreen shrub with attractive aromatic lanceolate foliage and stunning red flowers with elongated stamens borne in mid-summer. Its foliage is a pinkish shade when juvenile which together with the sculptural cylindrical flowers themselves and the knobbly seedpods remaining from the previous year's flowering make for a year-round succession of interest. Hardy in a sheltered south-facing position in the warmer parts of the UK, like all bottlebrushes, Callistemon citrinus prefers full sun and a moist yet well-drained soil.
