Abutilon 'Canary Bird'
Abutilon 'Canary Bird' is an old Victorian hybrid with soft palmate foliage and large extremely attractive yellow flowers. The cup-shaped flowers nod downwards like bells, are strongly veined and are a delicate buttery pastel shade.
Abutilon 'Canary Bird' grows to a medium-sized shrub to about 3m and being somewhat tender makes an ideal conservatory plant. It will overwinter outdoors in only the most favoured locations; the sheltered microclimates of London gardens that benefit from urban heat radiation and coastal locations of the south and south west that benefit from warm maritime air. Overhanging branches that form a canopy and protect from frost and a sunny south-facing wall will help. Elsewhere, it will usually overwinter in an unheated glasshouse although a covering of fleece is a sensible precaution.
Abutilon 'Canary Bird' is a sensational plant, producing flowers from spring and continuing prolifically throughout the summer months. The flowers are very popular with pollinating insects and butterflies.
