- Glossy green foliage
- Good drainage
- Protect in winter
Agave horrida ssp horrida is a highly ornamental fast-growing Agave that forms a beautiful symmetrical rosette with rigid stubby oblanceolate leaves that are a very attractive glossy green in colour. It has a dark terminal spine and dark marginal toothy spines that turn a papery white with age and closer to the growing centre of the rosette. It comes from high altitude at elevations of 2100-2400m in Central Mexico, growing on rocky slopes, volcanic rocks and lava fields northeast of Cuernavaca, Morelos and can also be found in San Luis Potosi, Veracruz and Puebla.
It is an exceptionally beautiful Agave and not really horrid at all although with its very stiff and solid leaf structure it's not the kind of plant you would want to sit on by accident!
During the summer growing season it doesn't seem to mind lots of water and growth is rapid. Because of its fast-growing nature it is a very rewarding Agave to grow and is ideal for containers as it reaches only about 1m in size. It is hardy to about -2C but is best kept indoors in a cool glasshouse under fleece during the winter. It also makes a great houseplant or conservatory plant.
