Amaranthus caudatus
Amaranthus caudatus, Love Lies Bleeding has long been cultivated in the UK as an annual where its elongated velvety purple tassels have made a spectacular and lasting impression on all who have seen it. A quick-growing plant, it rapidly forms a large ornamental bush and although it may need staking at first its robust roots will soon anchor it in place. Nonetheless it a still somewhat delicate and brittle so a sheltered spot away from prevailing winds is sensible. Interspersed with exotics or large leaved perennials it makes for stunning planting combinations.
Originating from South America, like other Amaranthus species it was used by indigenous Americans as a food source, its seeds being a staple grain crop. It is also widely used in floral displays as its cut flowers last surprisingly well.
