Euphorbia horrida
Euphorbia horrida, African Milk Barrel, is a chunky cactus-like ribbed succulent from South Africa with a columnar basally-branching stem that forms a spiky bush. It is a highly attractive plant with a crinkly often-crumpled look to its ribs that bristle with many dark reddish-brown spines and with an epidermis that has patches of a beautiful chalky-blue bloom. In cultivation it requires conditions that mimic its arid natural environment and needs a completely free-draining substrate with lots of grit and a very modest and restrained watering regime even during the summer months - with no water at all during the winter. Although it can be placed outdoors during the summer, care must be taken to ensure it doesn't get drenched in a summer shower. The danger of rotting from over-watering is never far away. Perfect in a terracotta container and ideal as a houseplant in a well-lit area where it gets lots of sun.
