Sedum makinoi
Sedum makinoi, Japanese Stonecrop, is a low-growing groundcover with lush green foliage that turns an attractive pink or maroon as autumn approaches or if exposed to too much sun. It is frost hardy and if grown outdoors this pink colouration will continue through to spring. For a Sedum, the flat, glossy, obovate-spatulate leaves are particularly large and are extremely attractive whether displaying their green colour in the shade or showing their stress-induced bronzy-pinkish tones. The prostrate growth sends out delicate roots from the nodes and spreads, quickly forming a lush carpet. The elongated stems are also ideal for cultivation in a hanging container. Its yellow flowers are produced in summer.
Very easy to grow, Sedum makinoi is a no-fuss, no-maintenance plant that is ideal in so many different situations. It can be grown in gravel gardens, clambering over rocks or dry-stone walls, on green roofs or xeric vertical gardens or displayed to advantage in large containers.
