Rheum palmatum 'Atrosanguineum' is a horticultural cultivar of Rheum palmatum or Chinese Rhubarb. Although somewhat variable, it is characterised by a reddish tinge to the foliage, bright red emergent shoots and stems and red flowers. Foliage often turns green after it has fully emerged particularly as the season develops but the undersides stay a deep reddish-purple. Unlike Rheum officinale, which has scalloped leaves the foliage is strongly palmate with jagged margins.
Rheum palmatum 'Atrosanguineum' forms a large clump over time and when established is a dramatic addition to the garden.
