Crinum amoenum is a stunning white-flowered Crinum from the Himalayas with elegant spreading and usually pendant strappy tepals and elongated spidery maroon filaments topped with orange-yellow anthers. This breath-takingly beautiful flower is complemented by the lush linear foliage which together form a very exotic and jungly effect. Growing up to altitudes of 2000 metres above sea level in the Himalayan foothills, Crinum amoenum is amazingly cold-tolerant and for a skilled grower with a sheltered microclimate in a favoured south or coastal location it will usually prove hardy providing the drainage is excellent. Most growers will be happy to have it in a large container where it can be given a long summer holiday in a shaded or semi-shaded spot before bringing it indoors for the winter where it is best situated in a humid aspect like the bathroom or the kitchen windowsill. A larger-size container will obviate the necessity to repot it too often as it prefers not to have its roots disturbed.
Crinum amoenum is an easy enough plant to grow if given dappled shade and a moist but well-drained substrate. The mix will benefit from grit, perlite and sharp sand added to a humus-rich base and topped with a bark mulch that will be both decorative and protective.
Rarely available. These are established growing plants - not loose bulbs.
