Zauschneria californica 'Glasnevin', or Zauschneria californica 'Dublin' as it is sometimes known (Glasnevin being the neighbourhood in Dublin where the National Botanical Garden, Ireland is situated) is a cultivar of the California Poppy that provides a truly spectacular searingly-bright red floral display in late summer when many other plants are finishing. Forming a scrambling ground cover it creates an exotic and eye-catching mass of flowers that never fails to impress.
It prefers full sun in the UK although it will tolerate partial shade and it requires a well-drained soil. The twiggy many-branched stems with their tiny silvery green-grey foliage are somewhat brittle and care needs to be taken when planting and later to avoid accidental physical damage in the first few years that it establishes itself. But once established, it can be pruned back in the spring and this will encourage greater flowering. A lighter clipping of new growth in late spring will ensure the plant will hold itself more upright under the weight of its own flowers in the late summer and early autumn.
