Acanthus hirsutus subsp. syriacus, Syrian Acanthus or Syrian Bear's Breeches, is an infraspecific taxon of Acanthus hirsutus and is occasionally encountered as Acanthus syriacus. It is am unusual herbaceous clump-forming Acanthus from Syria with a bristly geoemetric rosette of of finely-dissected thistle-like foliage from which arises a beautiful inflorescence with white flowers and hairy green bracts darkening to purple.
Acanthus hirsutus subsp. syriacus appreciates a sheltered south-facing aspect with full sun or some shade and a deep fertile but well-drained gritty soil. Mulch with grit for winter when it goes dormant.
