Sabal etonia, Scrub or Cocksrcew Palmetto, is a smaller stature palmetto from the north-central, mid-central and south-eastern counties of Florida with greyish-green costapalmate foliage and an underground trunk similar to the growth habit of Sabal minor. It tolerates dry sandy soils and prefers a more free-draining substrate than Sabal minor. A nitrogen-rich fertile mix to which has been added washed sand, perlite and slow release fertiliser will produce reasonably fast growth. It is ideal for smaller scale gardens where a Chamaerops, for instance, would eventally become too large.
Sabal etonia is not as hardy as Sabal minor and in the UK will need a thick winter mulch and some crown protection during extremes of winter weather or in colder inland locations or whenever prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures make exotic gardening just a little more challenging.
