Impatiens niamniamensis, Congo Cockatoo or Parrot Impatiens is a spectacular free-flowering balsam from tropical Africa with a green-mouthed five-petalled flower that is usually not even noticed and completely outshone by the bi-coloured yellow and scarlet flattened tube that sits behind the green corolla. The curving scarlet spur at the end of this tubular structure has the impression of a parrot's beak and gives it many of its common names.
Impatiens niamniamensis is best grown in shade or in a predominently shady aspect with a rich moist substrate. Although tender it can usually kept going through the winter by bringing it indoors in October and keeping it dryish/only just moist and placing it in a warm humid atmosphere in indirect light. A bathroom or kitchen windowsill is perfect.
