Calathea lancifolia, Rattlesnake Plant has perhaps the most beautiful foliage in a genus of plants renowned for their beautiful leaves. Mottled in an irregular herring-bone (or rattlesnake!) pattern with a deep violet-maroon colouration on the undersides, the foliage of Calathea lancifolia is a never-ending joy to the eye. Perfect as a houseplant - ideally in a warm humid atmosphere like the bathroom or possibly the kitchen - Calathea lancifolia can also be taken outside in the summer and given a spell in a shady moist spot away from the burning rays of direct sunlight. Keep the potting mix moist but not soggy. Sitting the pot in a saucer of moist hydroleca is an ideal way of ensuring the plant has its own micro-climate of humid air and will keep the pot free-draining.
