Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', Golden Hakonechloa is a magnificent cultivar of Japanese Forest Grass with striped golden and green foliage. Graceful, elegant and with a very zen-like quality, Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'' is a grass that lends itself well to urban courtyard gardens and contemporary design. It prefers moist shade and to my eye, the colour in shade is best: a deep rich lime green and gold. In the sun it becomes paler, more yellow.
Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is a slow-growing grass and takes several years to make a decent size clump...but it's worth the wait! The cascading shape, the brilliant colour that brightens any dark corner, the uplifting sanctuary-like calmness that seems to permeate the atmosphere wherever it is planted all combine to make this an exceptional plant.
