Zingiber mioga is a vigorous hardy Asian ginger that is commonly used as a culinary and medicinal herb in Japan, Korea and China. In Japan in particular, it is prized for its delicate flavour. As an ornamental it is well-suited to cold temperate climates as its roots are very cold hardy although giving it a thick winter mulch in the UK is always sensible. It is robust and tall growing with attractive lanceolate foliage and inflorescences that are borne on elongated underground stalks from which the pale whitish-yellow flowers emerge.
Although the flowers are delicate and very beautiful, being borne at ground-level means they are not as dramatic and in-your-face as many gingers but Zingiber mioga makes up for this with its lush jungle-like foliage and its extreme cold tolerance.
Highly recommended. Limited quantities.
