Helleborus x sternii is a hybrid between Helleborus lividus, from Majorca and Corsican Hellebore, Helleborus argutifolius (now renamed as Helleborus lividus subsp. corsicus). From its tough Corsican parent it inherits hardiness and from its more tender Majorcan parent its reddish-purple stems. The flowers open to reveal the lime-green colour of both parents but which is strongest in Helleborus argutifolius.
Helleborus x sternii is a charming vigourous hybrid with a relatively reduced stature that is ideal for many smaller gardens. The foliage is elegant, serrated yet tough and can withstand direct sun although it prefers semi-shade. Like its parents the foliage has an exotic flair. The combination of pinkish-purple and lime-green on the flowers is a winner and natural looking without any of the artifice that has become the norm with many Hellebore cultivars
