Pteris umbrosa, Jungle Brake, is an evergreen semi-hardy fern from southeastern Australia with lush green fronds held aloft on short stems. Taxonomically, the classification of Pteris umbrosa is still unresolved but this state of botanic limbo has not stopped it from being an ever-popular, attractive and sought-after fern amongst collectors. Is it hardy or not? As always, hardiness is a relative issue and entirely dependent on your location and the severity of the winter. Put simply, it is not fully hardy in the UK. However, in warm, sheltered aspects in favoured southerly and coastal locations or city microclimates it may pull through. In the shelter of a wall and with overhanging branches and a thick mulch the chances are improved. For everyone else, you can grow it in a container and bring it into the bathroom over winter where it makes a stunning addition to your houseplant jungle.
