Delosperma sutherlandii, Sutherland's Hardy Ice Plant, is a gorgeous mat-forming Delosperma with an extremely attractive flower that has vibrant pink-purple petals in the centre and contrasting yellow anthers. It has the largest flowers in its genus and they really are very cheerful. It is one of the hardiest Delospermas and will take sub-zero temperatures down to about -10C but it needs to be kept perfectly dry throughout the winter. A very free-draining mix with lots of grit, gravel and perlite is needed and - if grown outdoors - cover it in several layers of fleece to keep it dry. In most UK locations it will be fine in a cold glasshouse without fleece but extra protective care will be needed in extreme winters.
Delosperma sutherlandii's low-growing habit makes it ideal in a gravel bed or scrambling over rocks.
