Araucaria araucana, the Monkey Puzzle Tree, is so well-known it needs little introduction. Its enormous stature and symmetrical sculptural habit makes it a dominant feature in any landscape in which it is used. Its overlapping scale-like foliage is tough and spiky and the trunk is tall and straight with the branches radiating form the trunk in a highly architectural manner. It requires a well-drained soil that is ideally slightly acidic. However, its main requirement is plenty of space. How many times have you seen a Monkey Puzzle Tree in a front garden and thought it was poorly situated? And that will be a tree that is far from fully grown. So if you have plenty of space then this may be perfect for you... otherwise perhaps not!
