Euphorbia stygiana, is one of the most spectacular of the shrubby Euphorbias and closely resembles Euphorbia mellifera with its handsome broad lime-green foliage that forms a symmetrical shape on the growing stem and a pronounced pale mid-rib. Whereas Euphorbia mellifera comes from Madiera, Euphorbia stygiana is endemic to the Azores and although it has been in cultivation in the UK for many years it is relatively unknown and rarely seen.
Although hardy in more southerly and coastal locations, a certain amount of common sense is required to grow Euphorbia stygiana. It needs a sheltered, well-drained sunny location. It should be fleeced in extended periods of sub-zero temperatures. It will need serious fleecing in colder locations. Try to be a zone-pushing hero with this and you may lose it. Grow it with care and common sense and you will have the most wonderful and rewarding plant .
