Polystichum tsus-simense, Korean Rock Fern or Tsus-sima Holly Fern derives its name from Tsushima, a Japanese Island in the Korea Strait but it is found across much of Asia from Taiwan and Japan in the east to Tibet and India in the west and it grows at a very wide range of elevations from low hills just above sea level in the sub-tropical climate of Tsushima right up to 3400 metres above sea level in Tibet. As can be inferred from this very broad range of climate and geography it is a very adaptable fern and will tolerate summer heat as well as being fully hardy in the British winter. Polystichum tsus-simense is a showy fern with delicately-veined, soft, graceful fronds with alternating pinnae and the stipes and rachises are dark and scaly creating a pleasing ornamental contrast.
A choice and desirable fern.
