Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Ursula's Red' is a selected cultivar of the Japanese Painted Fern, a cultivar that many people will know by its more familiar synonym, Athyrium niponicum var pictum 'Ursula's Red'. It is often sold under this taxonomically out-dated name.
Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Ursula's Red' has an elegant colouration of pale greyish-green fronds dusted with silver and the stipes, rachis and rachillae are a contrasting deep maroon-red. On either side of the rachis a broad band of dark colour extends across the pinnae further enhancing the contrast. This colouring is at its strongest in the Spring and many of the fronds will fade to green over the summer.
Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Ursula's Red' is a very hardy deciduous fern and prefers a shady location in a humus-rich soil.
