Kniphofia uvaria 'Nobilis' is a magnificent cultivar of the type speceis, Kniphofia uvaria. If you like your Red Hot Pokers to be tall and imposing, this is the one for you. Capable of sending up its inflorescence to almost 2m, Kniphofia uvaria 'Nobilis' is one of the giants of the species, yet, despite its considerable height, it is also quite sturdy as well. A bright orange-red, the 'Nobilis' inflorescence tends not to have the yellowish flower 'skirt' at the base that the more common two-tone Kniphofia uvaria type species has and is consistently red throughout the entire flowering spike.

The clump-forming habit, the explosions of linear foliage and the enormous architectural raceme of fiery tubular flowers is a winning and very rewarding combination. It likes a warm, sunny position and tolerates drought and poor soil and requires little attention but will respond appreciatively to a well-dug humus deep-rich soil, regular watering and feeding in the summer and a good thick winter mulch. It is always worth giving a little extra care to Kniphofias to bring out their best qualities and with Kniphofia uvaria 'Nobilis' that extra time spent in seeing that its cultivation needs are meet will repay itself many times over when it starts to push up its huge and dramatic spike.
