Edgeworthia chrysantha, Oriental Paperbush is a choice deciduous shrub from China and the Himalayas with globose inflorescences of yellow flowers that appear in late winter or early spring before the foliage. The flowers resemble an exotic yellow daphne - to which it is related - and the nodding fragrant inflorescences, which are borne on the terminal shoots are a magnet for winter pollinators. Believed to have been introduced into Japan and Korea, the bark of Edgeworthia chrysantha is utilised in the production of fine-quality hand-made paper, mitsumata, a tradition that dates back to the sixteenth century.

The Plant List currently lists Edgeworthia chrysantha as a synonym of Edgeworthia tomentosa, a taxonomical change that would be unlikely to catch on with horticulturalists!
