Hakonechloa macra, Japanese Forest Grass or Hakone Grass is an exceptionally beautiful bamboo-like grass from Japan with a graceful arching habit. It has a refined zen-like charm that lends itself well to contemporary planting and is much-loved by designers for the elegant sophisticated atmosphere it creates particularly in urban or courtyard gardens.
Hakonechloa macra has a low habit which makes it ideal for softening the edges of hard landscaping and is used to great effect to create a green border that can gently drape its foliage over stone surfaces.
It prefers a shady aspect with a moist humus-rich soil that is kept well-mulched to maintain humidity. It may scorch if given too much exposure to extremes of sun.
