Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' is the purple-black foliage form of Aeonium arboreum and its dark colouration and perfect geometric rosettes combine to create a truly stunning plant that is ideal for bedding out in the summer. It develops a tall woody stem with age and usually sprouts side shoots of its fleshy leaves in the spring or throughout the summer. It needs excellent drainage and enjoys full sun and should be brought back inside for the winter avoiding the first frosts in October.
Various named cultivars of this exist; the most often seen is Aeonium arboreum 'Schwarzkopf' or the synonym, 'Zwartkop'. This is often described as Aeonium arboreum var. atropurpureum f. nigrum 'Schwarzkopf' (or 'Zwartkop').
Yellow flowers appear in a tall pyramid-shaped raceme after several years of growth.
