Iris pseudacorus 'Variegata', the variegated Yellow Flag, is a cultivar of the native Yellow Iris. It has strong yellow variegation on the foliage as it emerges in Spring and the yellow colouration tends to slowly fade as the seson develops. It is a robust tall-growing plant reaching up to 1m or more with elegant bright yellow flowers held aloft from early May through the summer months. Iris pseudacorus 'Variegata' is a selected naturally occuring sport of the green-foliaged type species which is found throughout the UK and Europe and parts of Western Asia and Northwest Africa.
It loves a wet environment and will flourish is pond margins, boggy areas and any low-lying freshwater habitats where drainage is poor.
Along with it green-foliaged parent, it is something of an underated plant; undeservedly so. Perhaps it is too common or too familiar for some tastes but there is something very wonderful about a good clump of this native Iris with its bright cheerful foliage and exotic yellow flowers.
