The well-known but always stunning amaryllid from South Africa, Nerine bowdenii, often commonly called the Guernsey Lily, has umbels of exceptionally beautiful pale pink flowers held aloft on tall erect stems. They flower in autumn at a time when most plants have finished flowering bringing a real sense of joy with their gentle ever-charming presence.

Like many amaryllids they dislike being disturbed or transplanted and bulbs will often take a season or two to really get established. The hardiest of the Nerines they endure temperatures as low as -15C but should always have a warm, sheltered aspect with excellent drainage.
