Eucomis comosa 'Sparkling Burgundy' is a selected form of the large-leaved type species which is endemic to the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. This form was selected as a seedling in 1983 by Tony Avent's Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina for its dramatic purple foliage.
The colouration can be somewhat variable - from greenish-purple to dark red-maroon - and is often strongest in spring as the foliage emerges. The inflorescence is enormous and borne on a peduncle that is tall, stout and a striking wine-red colour. The star-like flowers are very beautiful being white with green and mauve filaments, pale yellow anthers and purple and white striped ovaries.
A stunning and choice cultivar.
