This is a quality reproduction vintage print of Fritillaria imperialis, Crown Imperial, reproduced from a chromolithographic print by Maurice Pillard Verneuil for Eugène Grasset's 'La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales' (1896) for which Verneuil was the principle illustrator. It appears in the volume as Plate 16.
Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942) was a French artist and illustrator whose ouevre spanned the Art Nouveau movement and the illustrations from 'La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales' are infused with this new style that took fin de siècle Europe by storm.
Fritillaria imperialis, the Crown imperial or Couronne Impériale is the well-known perennial geophyte from central Asia with tall stunning lily-like flowers and a curious musky aroma.
