Delosperma congestum is one of the hardiest Ice Plants for the UK climate and forms a low carpet-like mat with bright yellow flowers during the growing season. Growing in its natural habitat at high altitudes in both Lesotho and South Africa it is capable of withstanding cold wet winter conditions providing it has a free-draining gritty substrate. As with all the hardy South African succulents, excellent drainage and careful placement in a suitable sunny location is key.
Apart from its need for good drainage, Delosperma congestum is a very undemanding plant and will reward you with a free-flowering groundcover that will grow in amongst your other succulents, clambering down rock faces and walls and giving your arid garden a satisfying lived-in look.
