- Glaucous-green with a golden central stripe
- Requires perfect drainage
- Large but slow-growing
- Sunny position, bring indoors for winter
Agave americana 'Medio-picta Aurea', Golden Variegated Century Plant, is a much-prized and rarely-offered cultivar of Agave americana with a golden-yellow medial stripe down the centre of the leaves which are blue-green. It is the reverse colouration of the more commonly encountered Agave americana 'Marginata'.
Agave americana 'Medio-picta Aurea' is a stunningly beautiful plant and creates a show-stopping rosette. It is not as hardy as other forms of Agave americana and it is best as a precaution to bring it indoors for the coldest of the winter months. It is far too valuable a plant to risk losing in a severe frost or a wet winter. It requires perfect drainage and the substrate should consist largely of grit, gravel and sharp sand to which has been added some limestone chippings and some slow-release fertiliser. In needs to be kept as dry as possible during the winter.
Agave americana 'Medio-picta Aurea' has so little chlorophyll in its foliage that growth is always slow and its size restricted. Propagation is only possible from offsets but vigour is so reduced that it produces few offsets.
Rare and seldom offered. Limited quantities. Highly recommended.
