Roscoea cautleyoides is endemic to the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan where it grows at elevations of 2000-3500 metres in upland meadows, grasslands and pine forests or low scrub. It is hardy in the UK and its foliage usually appears in May, avoiding the worst of the frosts. The stems are robust and grow quickly and the pale yellow flowers are borne in clusters that continue throughout the summer months.
Although this particular clone is pale creamy yellow, Roscoea cautleyoides can be variable in colour with some clones producing purple or occasionally pale pink flowers. The clone sold here occasionally has some pale purple specks.
Roscoea cautleyoides is a an easy Roscoea to grow, tolerating some sun but prefering partial shade where its foliage is less likely to scorch in the summer sun. A thick bark mulch will help to keep the soil moist in the summer months and insulate the rhizomes during the winter.
