Phormium 'Dark Delight'
Phormium 'Dark Delight' is an exceptionally beautiful, dark chocolately-reddish-brown, almost-black leaved cultivar and was introduced in 1979 by Magaret Jones of New Zealand Flax Hybridisers. 'Dark Delight' has Phormium colensoi in its parentage (previously known as Phormium cookianum) and consequently is much more manageable for the confines of the average British garden than Phormium tenax or the cultivars derived directly from it, growing only to about to about 1m in height. It slowly clumps to a very elegant and stylish plant, its dark arching strappy and very architectural foliage forming a striking contrast with other colours, particularly when used in combination with silver-leaved plants or large-leaved green foliage.
Its small stature and stylish good-looks makes it ideal for contemporary container planting but care should be taken to make sure it doesn't dry out during summer. Phormiums do not like drying out in the heat.
Recommended.
