Pellaea rotundifolia, Button Fern or New Zealand Cliff Brake, is a charming evergreen fern with small round button-like pinnae on either side of a reddish-brown midrib. It has a prostrate habit and its long fronds will arch downwards in long cascades if given a high perch or elevated container. It is shade-loving and is tolerant of some dryish spells. It does not like waterlogged soils. Not fully hardy in colder regions it is best in a container and makes an ideal houseplant if kept misted. In protected micro-climates in the southwest it can be experimented with outdoors but it may need fleecing in winter. Overwinters well in an unheated glasshouse under fleece.
