Ornithogalum candicans
Ornithogalum candicans, Summer Hyacinth is a South African perennial geophyte with a tall statuesque inflorescence of white waxy nodding flowers that are pleasantly fragrant. The magnificent inflorescence can grow as tall as 1.2 metres and with its large strappy upright foliage it makes for a strong accent plant during the summer months as well as looking perfect in large imposing drifts. It is often seen listed as Galtonia candicans, a now deprecated synonym.
Ornithigalum candicans requires a warm sunny spot with a rich but free-draining soil to which lots of grit or gravel has been added. It would be a shame to grow this elegant tall beauty only to see it toppled over by the wind so situate it in a sheltered aspect. Water it well in the late summer as it comes into flower.
