Sedum palmeri

Sedum palmeri is an unusual and very attractive Sedum from northeastern Mexico where it grows in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental at elevations of 1000 metres above sea level, forming dense carpets on the rocky slopes. It is hardy in most parts of the UK, surviving frosts down to at least -10C and it can be protected with a covering of fleece when temperatures are likely to dip lower. 

Sedum palmeri has rosettes of large fleshy green to greyish-green foliage which like many succulents turns shades of pinkish-red under the stress of sun or cold. The leaves are considerably larger than most Sedums and more resemble the foliage of an Echeveria or an Aeonium. It flowers early in the Spring, producing numerous showy bright yellow star-shaped flowers which are borne on a multi-branched inflorescence that arches out over the foliage.

It needs a well-drained soil with plenty of gravel added to the substrate. A rocky surface for it to clamber over will further improve the drainage. It prefers partial shade in its native habitat although in the UK it tolerates full sun well.
