Dryopteris erythrosora, Japanese Shield Fern or Lacy Autumn Fern, is one of the most beautiful of the Dryopteris genus and a favourite for designers and gardeners wishing to create a soft delicate under-planting of hardy ground ferns. It has fine bi-pinnate fronds with elegant lacy pinnae and is a remarkably tough fern, able to cope with the worst of the British weather.
Dryopteris erythrosora prefers a moist humus-rich soil, a humid atmosphere and shade or partial shade. It is tolerant of drier and sunnier conditions.
