Cycas revoluta
Cycas revoluta, Sago Palm, is endemic to Japan where it occurs only in scattered populations in southern Kyushu and the Ryukyu Islands although in cultivation it is the most widely available of the Cycads and was first introduced into Europe in large quantities by the German horticulturalist Albert Wagner.
Cycas revoluta is hardy in the milder southern parts of the UK and sheltered microclimates further north. It is an elegant and extremely attractive Cycad, forming a symmetrical crown of stiff glossy pinnate foliage atop a thick tough trunk. It grows slowly and is extremely long lived, in time forming a tall trunk often with many offsets.
Cycas revoluta requires a fertile subtrate that is very well-drained and a warm sheltered location. It will do best in a either full sun or a south-facing bright but partially shady aspect. At intervals, a new set of leaves occurs. This flush of new growth rapidly unfolds and care should be taken with the delicate new leaves to ensure they don't get scorched by too much strong sun.
