Bergenia purpurascens, Purple Bergenia is an attractive species with elliptic or ovate-elliptic foliage which takes on a deep maroon-purple colouration during the winter months before reverting to a bright glossy green in summer. Relatively small-leaved for a Bergenia it slowly spreads to form a low ground-covering clump. The flowers are rosy-pink borne in panicles on a tall stem.

A good plant to experiment with in planting combinations that use more obviously exotic plants like bamboos and ferns and does well lodged vertically between stones on walls to create an over-grown jungle effect.
