Bergenia ciliata, Fringed or Hairy Bergenia is probably the choicest and most desirable of the Bergenias. A large olive-green leaf fringed with tiny hairs and a pale pink flower held close to the rosette, it has a singular charm. In its native Himalayan range it is often found growing vertically out from rock-faces and vertically is always the best way to grow Bergenias. The simple expedient of planting them into a vertical surface lifts them from the mundane to the sublime, recreating a naturalistic jungle look. The roots can easily be crammed into cracks in your rock wall, pack it with some loam to keep them in place and let them eke out their life perched in all their glory.
