Phrynium pubinerve
Phrynium pubinerve is an interesting member of the Marantaceae with handsome glossy green foliage on tall upright petioles up to 60cm high. The creeping rhizome throws up several growing stems and in time produces a tall elegant clump. The overall effect is a very exotic tropical-looking plant. The inflorescence is produced from the side of the petiole from an internode with the bracts enclosing small inconspicuous pale cream-white flowers that are followed by orange-red globose fruit.
Phrynium pubinerve is ideal for a houseplant in the winter and during the summer can be pot-plunged outside in a semi-shade position in a warm moist sheltered aspect.
This is not a plant to try to overwinter outdoors.
Sometimes sold under the synonym Phrynium capitatum.
