Hesperantha coccinea 'Major'
Hesperantha coccinea 'Major', Red Flag Lily, is an exceptionally beautiful and large-flowered cultivar of the type species, which until relatively recently was known as Schizostylis coccinea 'Major', a name that has been taxonomically relegated to a synonym but by which the plant is still known to millions of gardeners worldwide.
It satiny red flowers can appear as early as August but are more usual in September and October at a time of year when - amongst the autumnal tones - the bright exotic blooms have a powerful impact.
It appreciates a sunny sheltered aspect and a moist fertile substrate during the growng season but during the winter should be kept as a dry as possible. Planting in a surrounding nest of grit and gravel will be beneficial.
